There is much hope to be had!
The following information has been applied to and produced results for people suffering from all sorts of illnesses. It's healed cancer, and it's helped M.S. patients bound to a wheel chair get up and walk. This approach got me the use of my hand back in only 3 days, after 3 months of lost use of it. It may seem "light weight" at first, but you can't argue with results. I'm healthier now than I've ever been. Haven't had a cold in 4 years since following these recommendations.
The following is taken from a personal letter to a CBN.com reader who wanted information for MS. I was happy to pass on what I'd learned. I am not a doctor. Please read the following with that in mind. Consult a good nutritionist for more information.
Dear Reader,
My primary doctor, as well as my neurologist offered no advice, no help, no treatment. And I'm doing great! I don't doubt their skill... because I now know that the most affective treatment, I FIRMLY believe, is strategic nutrition. And that is VERY hard for a doctor to advise on. The main thing I needed from the doctors, is a confirmed diagnosis. I am confident that I got a qualified, confirmed diagnosis. That's all I needed from him. (I wanted more, but looking back, it's all I needed from him.) Next, I needed information.
Taking drugs - Avoid it at all costs until you exhaust the natural nutritional remedies. You would be fighting an uphill battle to begin drug therapy, if you still have a diet that pours toxins into your body, and offers No nutritional value. (this is the case in most "ready made", highly processed, convenience foods.) You'd be forever fighting off symptoms, and never fixing the problem. And that would be a real drag.
Your nerves are not being attacked because you have a "Copaxone" ( drug ) deficiency. They are being attached because your system is over stressed (knowing our foods these days, you are probably mal-nourished), and your immune system is extremely low in it's natural resources. This is your body's way of coping - since the usual coping mechanisms are shot. And now, so are your nerves!
Someone gave me a book. It's turned out to be ALL the information I needed and then some. I've come to love this book. If covers every ailment known to man, I think...

:: Wonder Drug ::
Our old family vitamin C routine for healing infections:
After not being able to type for almost 3 months, I started mom's vitamin C routine for infections like tonsillitis. It's a 5 day routine.
As a child, I was very much prone to tonsillitis every time I'd get a cold. Since my mother discovered this remedy, I have not had tonsillitis. I have had no need for antibiotics, or to see a doctor for an infection since then either. (About 20 years now, and counting!) Note: The recommended daily allowance for vitamin C is only about 60mg.
But that's a joke. Even a healthy person should take at least 1000mg a day. I take 4000mg every night before bed now.
This remedy requires starting at 20,000mg for the first day alone.
Directions: Start with 18 - 20grams the first day,
and decrease by 2 grams per day, for 5 days.
(tonsillitis recipe for healing an infection / inflamation)
Note: 1 gram = 1000 mg.
You will want to have 1000mg tablets.
(Not the smaller dose chewables!)
Warning: The bad news is this: Extremely HIGH doses of Vitamin C can really upset your stomach. Taking too much at once will cause diarrhea. Because vitamin C is water soluble, whatever your body does not use will be expeditiously passed through your system. The good news is this: Because vitamin C is water soluble, you should not have to worry about it becoming toxic at high levels, like some vitamins can be.
To avoid abdominal trouble, try taking 4-10 grams at a time. Be careful for your stomach but also note: You must take the full day's dose within 2 to 4 hours or IT WON'T WORK. Vitamin C will not work like an antibiotic unless it is in VERY high doses.
After I started on the vitamin C remedy, I could type again on the third day. I've had full use of my hands since then, and I learned pretty quickly how to avoid upsetting my stomach. So that isn't an issue anymore. I take all of mine before I go to sleep at night.
Disclaimer: Vitamin C should ONLY be used like this
for clearing up an infection
or inflammation.
Vitamin C is NOT a cure for M.S. nor will it cleanse your body of toxins.
It will NOT chase away a virus.
If you don't have an infection, you are sure to have abdominal trouble because your body will not be able to use such a high dose.
Vitamin C WILL give your immune system a jumpstart so that your body can repair itself. You may notice that it will slightly raise your body temperature, like a fever, when your body is fighting off something. It should only do so while the vitamin C is working through you that day. There should be no lingering fever. It IS a good healing remedy for infections and inflammation. (The cause of most MS symptoms - inflammation of the nerves)

:: Coffee ::
My usual 2 cups of coffee and other favorite poisons
One day when I was gone for a weekend, I didn't pack enough vitamin C for the day of traveling home. I expected to see a decline immediately, as I had before, at times when I ran out of vitamin C. But there was no decline!
Then I remembered that I did not have my usual 2 cups of coffee (toxins) that morning either. This was in January 2001. I have not had my morning coffee ever since. I looked at my book again, to see what other foods it recommends staying away from. I've seen great results! Summary: Eat whole foods!
When you're sick, your body is NOT deficient in a prescribed drug,
but it IS deficient in some sort of nutrient.
You MUST give your body what it needs or it can't heal or repair itself.
You must also STOP feeding it things
that it deems as poisonous.
You may have a slight allergy to white flour.
If that's the case, then for you, white bread is poison.
You must STOP poisoning yourself!
"Get use to grazing" is what my nutritionist said.
Goal: AVIOD TOXINS. Flush out the ones you have. (fruit and juice does this well - but a health food store will have things that are extremely effective for this. Sam's club isn't bad either!) If your condition is serious, you may want to look into a detoxifyer like "green drinks". If you ask for this at a health food store, they'll know what you mean.
I've become a big fan of Cranberry grape juice! Has to be 100% juice to be an effective detoxifier. Every grocery store has it.
Detoxifying puts your immune system in GREAT shape.
Then your immune system will battle your symptoms for you, and quit attaching your nerves!
The more "processed" a food is, the more toxins it will have. It's been handled more, and the natural nutrients have probably died in the process. There is nothing "toxic" about a cucumber. But I'd worry about things like "hot pockets". The more "convenient" a food is, the more processed it is. I stay away from all that stuff now, and I feel great, and have great hope that in doing this, my symptoms are under control!! And that's WORTH eating differently than I use to.
I now take a lot of vitamins every day, and think differently about what I decide to eat. I ate healthy before, but now, I have a strategy in mind, so it's different. Just "eating healthy" won't cut it. There are really healthy things that you should no longer eat because of your specific condition.
Through eating strategically
... and taking vitamin supplements, you can boost your immune system, (then your nerves won't get attached anymore) slow the "oxidation" of cells in your body, strengthen your nervous system for future stress (and even provide some healing of what has been damaged) cleanse the toxins that build up in your muscle tissue, and there's much more that the book talks about. All this is possible, just by eating strategically, and taking some supplements. There is no one drug that can do all that for you. And you have to eat! So just eat strategically.
When you do the above, there are added benefits that are not the goal, but you get them anyway. When toxins are cleaned out, you digest food better, and actually absorb nutrients much better!! When you address the "oxidation" that occurs from stress in your body, you also get added energy. It's just a "side effect"! When you boost your immune system, you will get sick less often, and have an overall sense of "well-being". You just feel better, healthier, stronger. When you are getting the vitamins and nutrients found in fruits and veggies/supplements, your skin, teeth, hair, tissue, organs, bones, circulation and brain all work, look, and feel better.
Your goal is to get your immune system to quit attacking your nerves, but look at the benefits that you get without even trying! It's a win-win situation. Weather you have MS or not.

A remedy that God has provided
I have really come to believe that any remedy that comes from what God has provided to meet our needs, rather than what man has concocted to solve his own problems, is the better option. God did not make the drugs we use, we did. And we suffer from side effects. God made fruits and veggies. Minimal side effects. Effective results! I would not have known what particular nutrients can do for me, had I not had the need to look into it. I feel like I have so much more control over how I feel, and an ability to address all sorts of ailments now that I didn't have before.
The book I mentioned speaks very much of these things. And much better than I can.
Check out the health channel on cbn.com too! There are 3 doctors and a nutritionist that will tell you the specifics on this stuff (over-all health. the book gives MS specific help). I've enjoyed learning from them. There is also a Community channel on CBN.com where you will be able to download whole "booklets" from these doctors on all sorts of topics along these very lines. Names: Dr. Colbert, Dr. Whitaker, Dr. Tabor, Nutritionist McFarland.
I've stolen a lot of words from the information on the health section of CBN.com, and especially the book - Prescription for Nutritional Healing. If you look into those, you'll be an expert on all of this stuff! And if you have a severe case, you'll know a lot more than I do. The book mentioned bee venom... ouch... not my first choice remedy... but I don't really seem to need it at this point.
Aspartame
On a side note, I've heard that aspartame causes MS like symptoms... Do you drink diet sodas? Same remedy. Aspartame is toxic. De-Tox, and you'll be fine. (so long as there isn't any permanent damage already) You'll find that detoxifying cures almost everything! I've heard of everything from acne to cancer being completely healed, cleared up, not to return, so long as the body is not saturated with toxins. (my nutritionist's husband came down with cancer just after I went to see her about my MS. Now, about a year later, he is cancer free.)
Convenient... My nutritionist firmly believes that all can be cured with the good foods that God placed here on the earth for us.

:: First Steps ::
So How In The WORLD Do I Even Begin To Apply All This?
In months of trying to implement a new diet, I've gotten to the point of seeking balance. It will be difficult to implement everything you read/hear. To some degree, you need to try. You will need to know what works and what doesn't.
But it looks like I don't need to worry so much anymore. I'm doing fine now. I've learned a whole lot in 6 months.
You'll just have to play it by ear. You may want to look into being tested for food allergies. They are often linked to provoking MS symptoms. You may come to find out that for you - white flour, or cheese, or eggs are toxic!
As for how long you've had MS
... my doctors guessed 6 years, because that was the first time I remembered having vision "weirdnesses". At the time, I thought it was stress. I had several neurological "weirdnesses" in the last 6 years. I rarely had insurance or money to do anything about it. I had no idea what it was... it's kinda nice now, to know what it probably was.
The book mentioned that stress and malnutrition (among many other things) will bring on an attack. It sounds like all of the changes that you have been through would certainly qualify as stress. Change is stress. You've had a boat load! During all the changes I was going through, I remember thinking that all of them were wonderful blessings! But at the same time, it was a LOT to have on my mind, and have to process. Change is stress! But if you add a struggle, or difficulty accepting any of those changes, an already tough time gets much worse.

:: Laughter Is Good Medicine ::
Enjoy the ride!
Laughter is documented to be very good for your immune system. Your nerves are depending on it!
Here's a great prescription... rent a comedy at least once to twice a week. I've heard of someone who did this, and the results were amazing. They are documented in a biographical book about... I think his name is Norman Cousins.
A co-worker friend of mine routinely joked me about the loss of control in my left hand and arm. When someone would come by, he'd say... "hey watch this - Kate, point!" as he'd hold his hand up, palm facing me. Due to the loss of control, when I took a stab, I would usually miss. Fortunately, Marc is a good friend. And he has quite a sense of humor! (otherwise I probably would have taken great offence to this!). So he kept me laughing. Still does. Looking back, I'm glad he did. This isn't usually a laughing matter. I'm so glad he kept me laughing. I believe he was a means of grace from God for me in this time. Through nutrition (God's remedy) I have full use of my hands and arms. Worrying would not have helped. (unfortunately, it's my natural reaction to do just that.) It would have instead hindered my recovery. But I believe that laughter most definitely helped the recovery process.
I learned two valuable lessons from my co-worker
1. Don't take anything too seriously. Marc has seen difficult times in his life. He's accomplished much, and dealt with much, but still has the playfulness of a kid.
2. Laugh at everything. (it's just plain good medicine) Not my natural response, but praise God, I'm growing in this area. And enjoying life more because of it!!
"When God Weeps" by Joni Eriksen Tada ministered to me a great deal. (that's a gross understatement) She took me to lots of great scripture for a season like this. You won't believe the joy that is possible in the midst of suffering. You could find that at a local Christian bookstore.
Also, a music CD by Sara Groves pointed my to God, and was a tremendous means of grace. The title: "Conversations".
I pray that you are able to surround yourself with some good information, and also friends (hopefully a good church) that will keep you laughing, encouraged, hopeful, and grateful. Your nervous system, if not your life, is depending a great deal on that.
"For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord; plans to prosper and not harm you. Plans for a hope and a bright future." (Jeremiah) Read Romans 8:15-39 "Suffering may last for a moment, but joy comes in the morning".
Consider it pure joy when you face trials of many kinds - because of the amazing fruit that will be worked into you, that will bless you for the rest of your life.
Remember that God, even though He allows a season of suffering, still gives bread and not serpents.
Blessings,
kate
PS - Plug into a great church if you are not already.
